I’ve had the best birthday ever traveling to the Ko Phi Phi Islands…..where the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed. Sailing through Ko Phi Phi Don & Phi Phi Ley are even more magical then one can imagine. The stunning scenery, rising sea cliffs, and dazzling lagoons are among the most beautiful in the world. After taking a one hour ferry ride from Ban Saladan in Koh Lanta to Tonsai Bay at Ko Phi Phi Don pier, we hopped onto a traditional longtail boat which was a much more enjoyable ride than the speedboat the previous day. It was only us, 3 local guides and 2 other couples from Ireland and England. The guides drove us all around the islands starting with Phi Phi Ley where we saw the Viking Cave, drove through Pi-Le lagoon, stopped off for some snorkeling in Loh Saman and then headed to the famous Maya Bay which is where “The Beach” was filmed. Although Phi Phi Le is uninhabited and only can be visited by day trips, the amount of people coming for the day is a bit crazy and somewhat spoils the dramatic scenery and overall vibe. Don’t get me wrong, it’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen, but some of the magical spark is lost when you are looking down a beach of a million tourists posing and taking pictures. It was a much different vibe then that of Koh Rok Island, where you can find your own little private beach.
Before heading back to the mainland of Phi Phi Don, we stopped by Monkey Island to feed the monkeys that are living among the island trees and cliffs. Brett fed a few monkeys some watermelon and bananas and they loved it! Our longtail boat then headed back to Phi Phi Don pier where we had a few hours of relaxing, drinking Chang beer and swimming on the beach before catching our ferry boat back to Koh Lanta Island. On the ferry ride back we met many other interesting travelers from all over including Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. While sharing a few more cans of Chang, my new friends gave me happy birthday song shout out (see video above) as we sailed through the Andaman Sea back to Koh Lanta.
After a long day in the sun, an amazing special birthday dinner of Baracuda Fish, Jumbo Tiger Prawns and Mini Mussels all served Thai style awaited me on the beach at Emerald Resort.
This 33rd year of my life will be one to remember always!!!
