It’s crunchy, it’s salty, it’s nutty and just a bit fishy too. It’s grilled grasshopper time! That’s right it’s time to try a taste of one of those nutritional insect snacks that have become a popular delicacy in so many parts of the world. Not only are insects high in protein, but they are also rich in vitamins and minerals. We just might be missing out back in the United States!
While traveling through Chumphon in Thailand, we decided to check out the local street food market with our new friends Jeff and Neda. The market turned out to be one of the best we’ve seen, in terms of diversity, presentation and yummy smells lining the streets. After sampling some basic street snacks, we came upon an insect food stall. Our friend Neda was the first to step up and buy some roasted grasshopppers. Much to her surprise she didn’t mind those little buggers and even went back for more. Her husband Jeff was next in taking that crunchy bite but not before picking off all the grasshopper legs.
They both urged Brett to give the little grasshoppers a try and after much contemplation Brett finally decided to take the plunge and clench his teeth into one of those crunchy roasted grasshoppers. We are still trying to figure out his reaction and if he’ll ever be back for some more of those protein, vitamin rich little buggers.
Watch as Neda, Jeff and Brett eat their first insect!
