Kaunas bus station for Cekiske family ancestry trip Ready for liftoff to see where the Finkelstein family is from As we approached the small town (800 people), my eyes latched onto an image of a man in the clouds (top left)
I had chills and the feeling like someone high above was watching me. David Falk Finkelstein? Locals in Ceksiske Locals in Ceksiske
Totem pole hiddent behind a tree near the big church The old Syngague Now abandoned and boarded up
I tried to find my way inside, without luck House next to the Synagogue boarded up Backside view of Synagogue from the weeds
A whole culture and time gone Makes me want to learn more about my forefathers Run down homes near the town church at the top
One market in the entire town. No restaurants Old school scale. Market had all sorts of deli meats, cheeses and pastries. Feels like Jewish influence is still there Town church
In the middle of Cekiske in front of church The town church where we (made some friends from Cekiske) believe 1800's Jewish records exist This cherry danish could easily be from Famous or Ben & Irv's!!
Town hospital Old tombstones from Catholic Cemetery Pasture behind the church and Catholic Cemetery
We walked from cemetery to frontyard goats in search of the old Jewish Cemetery Decided to ask someone at the town library One person spoke broken English
They didn't understand the word "Jewish", but "Hebrew" and a drawing of the star of David got us on the right track! I nice young guy volunteered to drive us into the pasture where the old Jewish Cemetery is We walked through the fields onto wooden planks and then across a small park
Oh, over a chain-link fence And there was the cemetery Overgrown and in awful shape
Most stones were illegible and faced down Hebrew was legible on a few, so further investigation is needed
The cemetery entrance facing the main road The sign says, "Jewish Cemetery" in Hebrew and Yiddish
Us in front of the cemetery sign Our way out
Back to the car Feeling satisfied, but eager to return in a few weeks to uncover the local records in Cekiske
